Adebola A. Adedimeji

Adebola A. Adedimeji is the director of the Population Council’s office in Nigeria. As director, Adedimeji leads the country strategy, providing strategic direction and technical oversight to research initiatives that advance HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention, care, and services among key populations; improve maternal health, and adolescent sexual and reproductive health; and more.

In his role, Adedimeji leads the Nigeria team in identifying, understanding, and sharing new evidence on the health needs of specific populations throughout Nigeria. He also oversees external relations with the government, donors, and local and international NGOs to identify research opportunities and promote utilization of research results.

Adedimeji comes to the Council from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in New York, where he was an associate professor of Epidemiology and Population Health and director of Research Operations for the Central Africa International Epidemiologic Database to Evaluate AIDS.

Adedimeji’s research has focused on HIV/AIDS, related comorbidities, and its progression and outcomes in populations with or at risk of HIV. He has also undertaken research to understand cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancer prevention; testing; progression; and treatment among specific populations throughout Nigeria, Rwanda, and Cameroon.

Before joining the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Adedimeji was a lecturer in Global Health and program director for the Master of Science in Global Health at Trinity College at the University of Dublin in Ireland.

Adedimeji has authored more than 80 publications appearing in peer-reviewed journals; he is an associate editor and reviewer of several high-impact publications, including BMJ Public Health, Journal of AIDS, PLoS One, AIDS and Behavior, and the African Journal of Reproductive Health; and he has presented at conferences around the world.

Adedimeji received his BS and MS in sociology and PhD in philosophy from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. Adedimeji also received an MPH from the University of London, an MBA from Yeshiva University, and holds postgraduate degrees in public health in developing countries and population and international health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Harvard School of Public Health, respectively.
