Wilson Liambila

Associate I

Nairobi, Kenya

Wilson Liambila is an associate in the Population Council’s Nairobi office. He implements, manages, and evaluates reproductive health research; identifies and arranges technical assistance to support project activities; and develops relevant and appropriate research tools, including the Balanced Counseling Strategy toolkit.

Liambila seeks to provide governments and providers of health services with research results that influence the way national programs are conceived, planned, implemented, and evaluated. His own research has contributed to the expansion from pilot to national scale of many programs in place today in Kenya, including integrating HIV testing and counseling into family planning services and the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness strategy developed by WHO and UNICEF.

Before joining the Council, Liambila worked for the Kenya Ministry of Health as the national coordinator of the Kenya Community Initiative on Financing Primary Health Care and as a health planner for the Health Reform Secretariat (HEROS).

Liambila is a member of the Kenya Clinical Officers Association and edits the association’s journal, CliniMED. He is on the board of the Organization for Health, Education and Research Services, a national organization that seeks to improve access to and use of health knowledge and resources in rural communities. Through his participation in Kenya Ministry of Health technical working groups and task forces, he has helped develop national-level health policy and strategy documents and promoted the expansion of community midwife services in Kenya.

Liambila has an MSc in health policy planning and financing from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
