Sharif Mohammed Ismail Hossain is an associate in the Population Council’s Bangladesh office, where he conceptualizes, implements, supervises, and evaluates operations research projects on sexual and reproductive health. His areas of expertise include qualitative and quantitative research on reproductive and sexual health, HIV and AIDS, family planning, gender-based violence, and capacity-building on operations research. He joined the Council in 1993.
Hossain was instrumental in introducing and scaling up emergency contraception in the national family planning program of Bangladesh. He also provided technical assistance to Nepal’s Ministry of Health in introducing emergency contraception in Nepal’s family planning program. Before joining the Council, Hossain was a clinical fellow for the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh.
Hossain has published numerous articles, reports, research updates, regional working papers, and book chapters, with some of his publications, manuals, and materials being used nationwide by the Ministry of Health and NGOs. He represents the Council at national and international forums, has made numerous presentations both nationally and internationally, and has worked as acting country director when required. He has a graduate degree in medical science from Chittagong University, Bangladesh, and an MPH from the National Institute of Preventative and Social Medicine, Bangladesh.
