The GEJE innovation hub focuses on tackling the global learning crisis and inequities in participation. GEJE generates data and insights on the ripple effects of education, unpacks how progress in education can translate into economic and social equity, and identifies programs that are working to eliminate inequity and injustice.
The Context
We are in a global education crisis. While progress has been made in access to schooling, completion rates remain stagnant and learning outcomes remain unacceptably low. Seventy percent of children in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) can’t read or do basic math, only one in four children in sub-Saharan Africa complete secondary school, and reading and math scores in the United States continue to decline. And on almost every measure, the situation is worse for girls, children of color, and lower-income communities.
The impacts are devastating, depriving future generations of the opportunity to succeed and to lead safe, healthy, full lives. The ripple effects of those individual impacts strain our economies, erode our social fabrics, and perpetuate inequity and injustice.
Education progress is hampered by significant gaps in the data needed to diagnose problems, and by the lack of sound research about which policies and programs work and how to reach the most marginalized.
Our Approach
GEJE is tackling the education crisis with innovative solutions and rigorous research at the intersection of education, gender, equity, and justice.
Our mission is to guide educational investments with robust evidence, insights, and solutions, ensuring that the next generation is equipped with foundational skills, equitable values, and critical thinking skills. These outcomes are vital if they are to succeed in a twenty-first century landscape increasingly shaped by the climate crisis and by escalating social and economic challenges.
What We Do
GEJE partners with educators, policymakers, funders, and community leaders from around the world to address key research gaps. Our work focuses on five key areas that identify and rigorously assess practical, innovative solutions in the United States and LMICs.
- Breaking down structural barriers to schooling access
- Catalyzing investment in quality early childhood education
- Giving every child access to foundational learning
- Championing gender transformative education
- Building STEM and critical thinking skills for an uncertain future
