The Population Council’s GIRL Center is pleased to invite you to a hybrid event to learn about the needs of adolescent girls in humanitarian emergency settings, to be held on Thursday, 26 October 2023, from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm EDT.
The formal program will include a 60-minute YouTube Live event for everyone. In-person attendees will participate in a 30-minute Q&A session with panelists connected virtually. In-person attendees are also invited to connect over coffee and snacks.
Evidence shows that despite the central roles adolescent girls play in families’ survival strategies during times of crisis, this critical population continues to suffer disproportionate consequences, to carry disproportionate burdens,and to be largely neglected within formal humanitarian protocols and response efforts. In the eight years since Population Council and a notable coalition of leading humanitarian organizations convened as the Girls in Emergencies Collaborative to consolidate commitment to supporting adolescent girls in humanitarian crises, the reach of humanitarian crises worldwide has intensified.
On October 26, 2023, the Population Council will convene a core group of practitioners, researchers, and supporters to hear from the those working on the ground to reach displaced adolescent girls with the critical knowledge, skills, and supports they need to claim their rights and persevere in high-stress settings.
Speakers will discuss challenges of crafting evidence-based programs to lay the foundations of improved physical and community security, social participation, reproductive health, choice in marriage and childbearing, psychological well-being, and livelihoods engagement in dynamic and often regressive humanitarian settings. Experience in three distinct contexts will be shared from practitioners and researchers working with: Syrians living in refugee camps in South Beirut, Lebanon; Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh; and displaced Somalis in Wajir, Kenya.
Together, we will explore how the defining characteristics of each of these humanitarian crisis settings shape the distinct needs of adolescent girls—and the challenges of addressing these needs in practice—and will discuss how lessons learned from practitioner experience can inform future investments.
In-person attendees are invited to engage directly with the panelists calling in from Lebanon,Bangladesh, and Kenya, and to stay beyond the formal agenda to connect and exchange over light snacks and refreshments.
