The Population Council’s Sajeda Amin will be a panelist in the Youth for Change—a youth-led side event that will explore the intersection of SDG1 (poverty eradication) and SDG3 (good health and well-being). The link between poverty and social exclusion with poor healthcare will be emphasized by focusing on how socioeconomic factors contribute to health disparities and create a vicious cycle. Health interventions that are of utmost importance for youth (sexual and reproductive health and mental health) will be discussed and relevant experts from the field will be invited. The target audience are representatives from UN agencies, NGOs, Member State delegates and youth- and health-advocates.

Key objectives

  1. Highlighting the Interconnectedness: Emphasizing the link between poverty and social exclusion with poor healthcare, focusing on how socioeconomic factors contribute to health disparities and create a vicious cycle.
  2. Youth Empowerment through Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights: Highlight the importance of empowering youth, especially in the context of sexual and reproductive health and rights, to break the cycle of poverty. Discuss the impact of access to comprehensive sexuality education and sexual and reproductive health services for youth, including contraceptive care, STI prevention and treatment, obstetrical care, and safe abortion services.
  3. Solution-Oriented Interventions: Summarising recommendations with a focus on solution-oriented interventions to empower youth, addressing both public healthcare measures contributing to breaking the cycle of poverty and socioeconomic measures contributing to good health and well-being for all.
