It is with heavy hearts that the Population Council shares the loss of our close partner and friend, Dr. Christina Wang. Dr. Wang was an internationally recognized investigator, renowned endocrinologist, and member of the Population Council’s International Committee for Contraception Research (ICCR). She also collaborated with the Council on the development of the Nestorone/Testosterone male contraceptive gel.

Dr. Wang was a Distinguished Professor and Assistant Dean at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Senior Associate Director for Clinical and Translational Science Institute of the Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and The Lundquist Institute. Her illustrious career included clinical research studies on androgen replacement therapy, hormonal male contraceptive development, and late onset hypogonadism. She previously served as Chairperson of the World Health Organization’s Task Force on Methods for the Regulation of Male Fertility, President of the International Society of Andrology, and President American Society of Andrology. She was awarded the Distinguished Andrologist Award from the American Society of Andrology in 2013 and the Mayo Soley Award from the Western Society of Clinical Investigation in 2015.

Dr. Wang was a member of the Population Council’s ICCR for nearly two decades (2005–2026) and we are deeply grateful for her many contributions, including most recently her lectures at the June 2026 ICCR meeting and the Fifth International Congress on Male Contraceptive Methods.

Dr. Wang made valuable contributions to the field of andrology and will be remembered for her unique insights, enthusiasm, leadership, and commitment to the field of male contraception. She will be deeply missed by her students, patients, and colleagues. Our deepest sympathies are with her family, including her husband, Dr. Ronald Swerdloff, and her sons, Paul and Michael Im.
