The Population Council has a long history of building research capacity in low-and-middle-income countries through fellowships, with the first biomedical fellowships granted in the 1950s. Many of these fellows went on to become leaders in their field, making an impact in global health and development around the world. This new fund will help us to build capacity in the next generation of biomedical researchers to address critical questions in sexual and reproductive health and create important partnerships between our scientists in New York City and research institutions in Africa.
The new program will be led by Director of Biomedical Research and Pharmaceutical Development, Tom Zydowsky.
