As Senior Clinical Research Associate (Senior CRA) at IPM South Africa NPC, an affiliate of the Population Council, Matheus Tiyo Mathipa is currently responsible for the planning, implementation, conduct, and reporting of clinical research projects in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, Good Laboratory Practice (GCLP) guidelines, Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) guidelines, International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines, and standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and processes. He is responsible for managing all aspects of the clinical project team as well as various consultants, vendors, and Clinical Research Organizations (CROs), if applicable. The general areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to, project planning, initiation, implementation and management; the conduct of clinical and epidemiology research projects; resource procurement and planning; monitoring project progress according to quality standards; SOPs, ICH and/or other guidelines to fulfill local, country and global guidelines and regulations; milestone planning and tracking; and project progress reports and management.
Mathipa has more than 10 years of clinical trial experience overseeing the progress of clinical trials and to ensuring that they are conducted in accordance with the currently approved protocol, ICH GCP, Site SOPs, and the applicable regulatory requirements. He worked on TB and Covid-19 vaccine studies, infections, and infectious diseases-HIV Prevention (microbicides, vaginal ring, PrEP), psychology-qualitative adherence driven studies, contraception, HIV observational studies, and pregnancy monitoring studies. He has a prior experience as a Clinical Research Associate Trainee (CRA) and since joining Wits RHI, he gained experience as an Clinical Research Internal Monitor and a QA/QC officer across multiple IND and non-IND studies.
Mathipa is currently studying MPhil in Health Systems and Research Services with University of Stellenbosch. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in HIV Management and Bachelor of Science.
