Matthew Alabi is the Research Manager at the Population Council in Nigeria where he currently leads the evaluation of the Adolescent Girls Prospective Cohort study in Northern Nigeria. This is a four-year, longitudinal study funded by the Children Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) to assess the short- and long-term impacts of the A360 intervention on adolescent girls’ contraceptive uptake and empowerment outcomes. The study will contribute to increasing contraceptive use among married adolescents which is essential to achieving goal 3 of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG): Reducing the global maternal mortality ratio, ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under five years of age, and ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services.
Alabi is a demographer and a biostatistician with over eight years of professional experience in social science and public health research. He has led and supported the implementation of several mixed-methods research funded by local and global organizations including the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Children Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), World Food Programme (WFP), and the Gates Foundation, among others. His core research focus includes the sexual and reproductive health of adolescent girls and young women, and maternal, newborn and child health.
Alabi holds a Bachelor and Master of Science (MSC) in Demography and Social Statistics from Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
