Nyovani Madise joined the Population Council’s Board of Trustees in 2018 and became Chair of the Board this year. A social statistician and global health researcher, Nyovani brings experience in a range of health areas and special expertise in research utilization. In this video, she shares her views on the Council’s impact, how it is evolving for the future, and her priorities as Chair.
Under Nyovani’s leadership, the Council’s international Board of Trustees is helping to shape the Council’s future direction. Our 21 Trustees bring expertise in areas including sexual and reproductive health, biomedical research, demography, communications, law, finance, investment, and management. Over the past year, we have welcomed several new Trustees:
- Elizabeth Abrams, Managing Member of Spruce Brook Partners, an independent consulting company providing governance and related services for companies undertaking complex transactions or transformational change.
- Sharon Cameron, Consultant Gynecologist and Professor at the University of Edinburgh, and a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare.
- Mark Mitchnick, CEO of Red Queen Therapeutics, a clinical stage venture-backed antiviral company, and director of several startup companies.
- Erica Barks Ruggles, retired U.S. Ambassador who served for over 32 years in senior international leadership and diplomatic positions both in Washington, DC and abroad.
- Whitney Snider, Vice President of Alexandria Venture Investments at Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc., overseeing life science investments for New York City.
“We are grateful for the breadth and depth of knowledge, skills, and experience that Trustees bring to the Council,” said Patricia Vaughan, Co-President. “With the support of the Board, the Council is embarking on a new direction to ensure we can continue to deliver independent, rigorous science that improves the health and wellbeing of underserved populations around the world.”
“The Board’s counsel and commitment to our mission is critical in navigating the evolving and challenging landscape of global health and development today,” added Jim Sailer, Co-President. “We thank Nyovani for her continued leadership and welcome the expertise and contributions that our newest Trustees have brought to the Council this year.”
