All of us at the Population Council are outraged and saddened by the recent incidents of racial violence, police violence, and racism toward Black Americans.

As a research organization committed to generating and using evidence to improve the lives of the most marginalized populations around the world, we condemn racism and oppression in all of its forms. We commit to being an active agent of positive change – to understand and challenge the injustices faced by oppressed communities in the United States and around the world, and to generating critical evidence to expose the social and economic inequalities of marginalized communities.

The racism we are seeing today in the United States reflects the enduring experience of people of color who have been subjected to generations of racial oppression and brutality. The Population Council stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, and we assert our intolerance for silence and inaction as we mourn the pain and devastation of racial injustice.  To all those grieving and processing the unrest and violence in the United States, know that you are not alone, and that your pain and anger are helping to fuel important conversations and, even more critically, action.

As we all work to understand, expose, and demand action around the systemic inequalities that exist in the U.S., and around the world, we will continue to strive to improve, speak up, be better allies, and actively challenge the injustices of the past, present and future. Thank you to Black leaders, Black-led organizations, and everyone who is leading the way to achieve racial justice and equality. Together, we can, and will, achieve change.
