Ann Gottert

Ann Gottert is an associate with the Population Council’s office in Washington, DC. A social and behavioral scientist, Gottert specializes in the areas of HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health, and intimate partner violence, with a focus on engaging men. She uses advanced quantitative and qualitative research methods to understand individuals’ behavior within diverse social contexts and to develop and evaluate public health programs.
Gottert leads three large implementation science studies for the DREAMS Partnership (funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), focused on HIV prevention among men in African countries. She also supports several studies under the Council’s Strengthening Operational AIDS Research (SOAR) project (funded by USAID/PEPFAR) and Frontline Health project (funded by the Gates Foundation).
Prior to joining the Council in 2016, Gottert served as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of North Carolina’s Department of Epidemiology, working on an NIH-funded HIV Treatment as Prevention trial in South Africa. Before this, she worked on another NIH-funded trial in South Africa, evaluating a community mobilization intervention to change gender norms and reduce HIV risk behaviors. Gottert also has experience in filmmaking, having co-founded a film production company in Madagascar where she created films and social marketing campaigns for international organizations.
Gottert received her PhD and MPH in health behavior from UNC-Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health, including an NIH predoctoral fellowship. She received a BA from Brown University. She has published in AIDS, Journal of the International AIDS Society, PLOS One, AIDS and Behavior, Contraception, and other peer-reviewed journals.
